Why is modular technology beneficial for the environment?

We are increasingly paying attention to how our homes and buildings impact the planet. In this context, modular technology is rapidly gaining popularity. But why is it so beneficial for the environment? Is it really better than traditional construction, and if so, in what aspects?

Why does modular construction fit into the sustainable waste management strategy?

1. Saving resources Modular technology involves the design and initial production of elements in strictly controlled factory conditions. Thanks to this process, the amount of raw materials used for this process is minimized - modular buildings use up to 20% less materials compared to buildings constructed in a traditional way.

2. Energy efficiency Thanks to precise construction techniques used in modular technology, these buildings are more tight and have better thermal insulation. This directly translates into less energy necessary to ensure optimal temperature inside (air conditioning / heating) compared to traditional buildings.

3. Shorter implementation time Faster construction means less CO2 emissions and other construction-related pollutants. Moreover, short construction time also means less interference with the surrounding environment and existing infrastructure.

4. Reusable Modular technology allows for repeated use of modules. The building can be easily expanded, changed its function or moved to another place. Flexibility in expansion, rearrangement and mobility are advantages that traditional construction technology does not have.

5. Sustainable waste management Modular technology fits perfectly into the sustainable construction strategy.

The 5R principle

At Algeco, great attention is paid to ensuring that the 5R principles (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle) are effectively applied at every stage of project implementation. More precisely:

  • Refuse: Modular construction allows you to avoid unnecessary materials and solutions that may be harmful to the environment.
  • Reduce: As previously mentioned, modular technology uses 20% less materials compared to traditional buildings.
  • Reuse: We use module equipment elements many times in various arrangements (e.g. furniture equipment, as well as some installations, etc.). This reduces the need to purchase new materials.
  • Repurpose: Modules can be customized to suit different functions and demands. We use the same structures many times, taking care of their condition and proper maintenance - this extends their life and allows for virtually unlimited arrangement possibilities.
  • Recycle: Many modular components are made from recyclable materials, further reducing their ecological footprint. At Algeco, we have concluded agreements with companies that collect used materials - e.g. Tarkett collects PVC floor coverings from Algeco that were used in modules and recycles them; other materials are also segregated after use and sent for reprocessing.

Jakub Łazowy, Managing Director of Algeco Polska, comments: Integration of the 5R strategy in modular construction is a step towards the future of construction, Zero-Waste Company and zero-emission buildings - Net zero. It's not just a trend, but a necessity nowadays.
