What are the standard dimensions of containers?

Although containers may seem like simple structures, their dimensions are not arbitrary. It is therefore necessary to first clarify which type we are referring to: whether transport containers, compliant with ISO transport standards, or modular containers, used as offices, support facilities or service premises. Both types have similar dimensions, but differ significantly in terms of their functions and technical requirements.

ISO shipping containers (compliant with ISO 668 and related standards) are standard transport units (most commonly 20- and 40-foot) used in logistics. They are designed for the safe and efficient transport of cargo, rather than for permanent use as living spaces. It is precisely their strictly defined dimensions that have enabled the creation of a global intermodal transport system, in which every container fits onto a loading platform, railway wagon or ship.

Modular containers (office, residential, sanitary or technical), on the other hand, constitute a separate category. Although their dimensions are often similar to transport standards, they do not have to meet the structural rigours required for transport. They are designed primarily with functionality, ergonomics and user comfort in mind.

Container dimensions and standards

For manufacturers such as Algeco, the quality and safety of modular containers are not derived from ISO transport standards, but from other international standards: ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety). These standards do not define the dimensions or technical parameters of the container itself, but guarantee that the design, production and use processes are carried out in a repeatable, controlled and safe manner, whilst respecting the environment. ALGECO, a manufacturer of modular containers, offers modules which, thanks to their standardised dimensions, allow for the creation of scalable solutions without the need to design each structure from scratch. Standardisation therefore enables faster assembly and easier management of the project.

Why use standard container sizes?

Containers with standardised sizes are not only convenient, but also save time and money. Properly designed modules enable:

  • speedy transport and straightforward loading,
  • easy assembly of containers into modular structures,
  • optimal use of the available space on the project site.

Is renting a container a cost-effective option? Choose a trusted business partner!

For many companies and projects, renting modular containers may be more advantageous than buying them. For seasonal projects, temporary retail outlets or event organisation, renting provides quick access to a ready-made solution without the need to invest in a purchase. Algeco offers flexible terms, technical support and the ability to tailor a container to a specific purpose. The company supplies tried-and-tested, functional units designed with practical application in mind. The modules can be freely configured, extended or adapted to changing needs.
